UNIT 8 – FUTURE TENSES This unit covered the (often confusing) future tense in English. While I had previously learnt all of these aspects of the future tense, I still found it nice to see everything summed up concisely in one convenient lesson. This lesson stated that there are seven future tenses in English, as it kept apart “will” and “be going to” forms, and included the present simple and continuous, on top of the four classic future tense structures (simple, continuous, perfect, and perfect continuous). I found the addition of so many “shall” phrases in this unit strange, as they are heavily British and don’t play a strong role in what we could refer to as “International English”, which leans strongly towards a more American English structure. Nevertheless, “shall” does form a part of classic British English and therefore is mandatory learning for students that are undertaking exams (as these are often British English). The teaching ideas in this unit were the highlight for me – especially the songs! I’ll definitely be using them in future lesson planning. The other ideas such as the scheduling conflict game and other pair-work worksheets were very nice as well. The next most useful part of this unit was the listing of common student mistakes, as it will be helpful to keep these in mind during lessons.
