This unit was packed with new and interesting information for me and I am sure that I will refer back to it again and again. I found it to be very interactive as I spoke sentences out loud to discover their intonation, spoke words out loud to discover their stress, and spoke sounds out loud to notice their place and manner of articulation. I especially appreciated the explanation of the phonetic alphabet--this is something I've wanted to learn for some time now, but has always eluded me until now. I also found the sections on sound joining and linked speech very useful. I've always wondered, when speaking to young children and non-native English speakers, if there is an appropriate time to use my natural linked speech, or if I should avoid it altogether in order to make sure the individual words are understood. This answered my question--at a certain level, students may wish to get as close of an approximation as they can to natural English speech. And at the very least, students should be able to understand natural English speech even if they, themselves, don't speak that way.
