Unit 12 discusses teaching productive skills, speaking and writing. Accuracy and fluency activities should be used and are equally important. Accuracy activities are generally used in the study phase and are controlled to produce correct language. Fluency activities are usually part of the activate phase and allow students to be creative and focus on the flow of communication. Types of speaking activities include controlled activities (accuracy based, language controlled by the teacher, i.e. drilling); guided activities (accuracy based controlled by the teacher, but with more creative output by students, i.e. guided role play); creative communication (fluency based, with output guided more by the students, i.e. free role play, debates). Encouraging interaction and making a comfortable environment for students will help encourage them to speak. In regards to writing skills, factors such as handwriting, punctuation, grammar, spelling, and layout must be considered. As with speaking skills, it's important to engage students to encourage them to be involved, such as by choosing topics that interest them, or allowing for creativity based activities. Games are a great way to incorporate fun into teaching and get the students active and involved in the language learning process.
