The teacher's role in a classroom is many and varied ranging from participant to manager, from model to observer, and as a tutor and a resource. The hardest part of being a TESOL certified teacher is perhaps the patience to be all these things and the intuition to balance them correctly when communication can be difficult. Being perceptive and sensitive to the good traits of a student and understanding their weaknesses as a student feeds directly into know when to be what role to best serve that student as they learn. These are important baselines to understand and learning to execute on them is an important step in teaching not just English but any subject matter.
