The first unit was very informative in that it isolates the different roles of a teacher. Language exists on several planes and the learning experience must reflect this. For example, listening to lectures is unlikely to stimulate confidence in speaking a new language. When the role of a teacher is deconstructed into these concise roles, it feels more manageable to ensure that all the roles are being fulfilled. Just as a teacher must acknowledge the different facets of language, I feel that understanding the different motivations for learning a language is equally pertinent. For example, I have been learning Mandarin Chinese to open doors professionally. However, I have met people who have been learning Mandarin simply out of a fascination with calligraphy.
