This unit discusses concepts and techniques for teaching productive skills- that is, writing and speaking. In order for each of these skills to be developed well by students, teachers need to have a balance of both accuracy and fluency activities planned in lessons. Accuracy activities are highly guided and controlled by the teacher, because the goal of these activities is to be sure that students are implementing the new language concepts correctly in their writing and speaking. Fluency activities are free/creative activities, allowing students to practice using language. The goal with fluency activities is with overall flow and effectiveness and not on total accuracy. Students should feel safe and accepted in the classroom, so they are willing to try and not as afraid to make mistakes. Be encouraging and accepting of their effort, even when they "fail" at first. Also, students need to get excited about speaking and writing. Including activities, such as competitive and cooperative games, in most lessons will ensure students are engaged and having fun while learning.
