This unit discusses the present tense of English and the four forms in the present tense- Simple, continuous, perfect, and perfect continuous. Simple is just the subject plus that verb. Continuous is a 'be' verb plus the verb+ing. Perfect is t'have' plus the past participle of the verb. This can be especially confusing because many verbs are irregular in the past participle form. Students will struggle even more in knowing how to write these. And finally, the perfect continuous, which is 'have been' plus the verb+ing. These four main categories each have specific instances that they are and are not used. As a teacher, I must be able to correct mistakes and explain why one form is used in a particular instance instead of another. With so many details and structure variation just in the present tense, students will struggle greatly in using these correctly. The more clearly I can explain and delineate the differences and give students practical application of each of the forms of the present tense, the better off they will be.
