Good teachers result in good students. This simple but essential thought seems to be the basis of Unit 1. A good teacher is kind and patient with a solid knowledge of the material as well as established rapport with his or her students. A teacher who is engaging and encourages students to interact and experiment with English is more likely to create highly motivated individuals. Good students must be willing to ask questions and accept their errors. If a teacher is able to approach error correction with a gentle manner then the student does not perceive it as a reprimand. This student will feel comfortable approaching the teacher with further inquiries. Adult students may feel hesitant in the classroom. They have prior experience with education, and they may not want to look foolish. Young learners are more open-minded, but they present unique difficulties as well. They may lack motivation or interest, which can cause behavioral problems. The teacher is an observer, tutor, and organizer. The teacher steps back and assesses the students. Observing reveals weaknesses, which the teacher is able to focus on in a more personal way during tutoring. Organizing activities and giving instructions in a clear, concise manner allows the students to learn without the classroom descending in to chaos. I believe model is one of the most important roles for a teacher. It's possible that the teacher is the first or only native English speaker that the students have encountered. This makes us responsible for exhibiting correct pronunciation and usage of the language. We have a responsibility to exhibit strong language skills as the students are learning and possibly adapting our speech patterns. I learned a great deal in this unit about the roles of teachers. I had not contemplated how varied these roles would be. Dealing with students at all levels of language ability gives us the opportunity to practice each role. It is a weighty responsibility. Acting as a resource while refraining from simply giving the student the answer requires balance. You must learn when to prompt them and when to pull back to allow for independent learning.
