This unit explores the rules, usages, and common mistakes in learning modal verbs, phrases, and passive versus active voice. Modal verbs include might, may, could, would, should, ought, can, shall, etc. These verbs are used as auxiliary verbs that add a modifying degree, politeness, or probability to the verb. These allow us to speak with different positions and certainty based on the situation. It's also important that students learning English learn about how sentences are formed through types of clauses-that is, Independent Clauses, Dependent Clauses, and Defining Relative Clauses. Independent Clauses have a subject and a verb within them and can stand alone as a complete thought. Dependent Clauses do not have a subject and verb, and therefore must depend on an Independent Clause. Defining Relative Clauses are clauses that are used to add defining information to the noun/object in the sentence. These are clauses that are necessary to the meaning of the sentence. If you remove a defining clause, the meaning of the sentence would change. Finally, Passive vs. Active voice is all about what is the focus in the sentence. In active voice, the object/noun is performing the action. In passive voice, the action is the focus and is being done to the object, or the object/noun is not specified at all. Passive voice allows for more ambiguity, and is generally viewed as less powerful in English writing.
