This unit teaches the basics of most grammatical categories. Breaking down the parts of speech is the first step, because it allows you to see what is happening where in a sentence. For each part of speech, though, there are a number of grammatical rules and exceptions to those rules. Teaching the irregular forms of common verbs, for example, seems to be no less important than teaching the regular forms. Knowing the structures of English from the inside is necessary for teachers to better explain and guide students. With vocabulary like "possessive adjectives" or "compound noun," it will be easier to demonstrate which rules apply when, and why.
