This unit teaches about receptive skills; reading and listening. Firstly, it explains the reasons and motives for reading and listening, that is, we read for a purpose or entertainment or both. Secondly it explains how we read and listen and points out a number of specialist skills we employ when doing so. Thirdly, it addresses problems usually encountered when teaching and learning these receptive skills. Such problems are related to the language, topic, creating interest and tasks. It explains the importance of pre-teaching vocabulary, carefully selecting texts, choosing topics the will interest the students and providing comprehension tasks that promote understanding. Lastly, it provides an example of a patchwork receptive skills lesson.
This uinit helped me understand the importance of teaching receptive skills and how to go about it. At the end of the unit I was able to prepare a lesson plan on reading comprehenshion using the teaching materials provided.
