Past tense can be divided into 4 main groups namely: Past simple, past continuous, past perfect and past continuous perfect. An example of a past simple sentence is: " I worked late last night." An example of a past continuous sentence is: " It was getting darker." An example of a past perfect sentence is: " When I arrived, the concert had started." An example of a past continuous perfect sentence is: " Before eating lunch, she had been clipping her toe nails for twenty minutes." There are general rules in which these tenses can be formed but also some exceptions on the rules that can only be learnt from hearing English and reading English regularly. There are for example irregular verbs also used which can only be learnt from heart and not through any set of rules. Examples of irregular verbs are: see- saw, have- had, make- made, do- did, come- came etc.
