I have leared that a good teacher: - Should be kind and patient. - Should really love teaching. - Should be lively and entertaining. - Is able to motivate learners. - Has a good subject knowledge. - Should have a good rapport and interaction with the students. - Should be able to engage all the students. - Should be able to correct studenrs' mistakes without offending them or affecting their motivation. - Should give individual help when necessary. With respect to teacher roles, I have learned that these include the following: 1. Manager and controller. The teacher is effectively having control over the class. 2. Organizer. The teacher gives instructions and organizes the students into pairs/groups. 3. Assessor. The teacher gives feedback, corrects mistakes, evaluates and grades. 4. Prompter. The teacher encourages students when they are stuck for ideas. 5. Participant. The teacher may take part in class activities to liven up these activities. 6. Tutor. The teacher may provide some guidence, encouragement and support to individual students during class activities. 7. Resource and facilitator. The teacher ensures that the learning process is flowing smoothly and that the class activities are allowing for the students' learning. 8. Model or monitor. The teacher is a model for the students in terms of pronunciation, grammar etc. Regarding the charactaristics of a good learner, I have learned that these include: 1. A willingness to listen to the language. 2. A desire to experiment with the language. 3. A willingness to ask questions. 4. An ability to think about there own learning experience. 5. An acceptance of error correction. 6. A desire to learn. I have learned that language learners can be devided into 6 levels: 1. Beginner. The learner has a knowledge of the language ranging from zero to very basic knowledge. 2. Elementary. The learner can form basic sentence structures and communicate simple topics. 3. Preintermediate. The learner can communicate a great variety of topics but is lacking in fluency and depth of language awareness. They make several mistakes with basic structures. 4. Intermediate. The learner communicates on a wide range of issues but is lacking accuracy and fluency. 5. Upper intermediate. The learner communicates on almost all topics but is lacking accuracy. 6. Advanced. The learner has a very good knowledge of the language and will be able to study more and more subtle items. Generally, language learners can be devided into two major categories. Adult learners and young learners. Adult learners are understood to be those above 18 years.
