This unit covers the 4 past tenses: past simple, past continuous, past perfect & past perfect continuous. Past simple is your basic past tense which mentions a completed action; i.e. I went to the park yesterday. Past Continuous refers to something that was happening at the time of another past event; i.e. I was sleeping when he arrived. Past perfect refers to an action that occurred in the past before other actions in the past; i.e. when I got home, I noticed I had left my phone at the store. Finally, past perfect continuous is an action that had been happening in the past but which does not indicate when that activity stopped or if it did at all; i.e. I had been sleeping for two hours when he came home. In this case, she could have slept for more than two hours, but this is not inherently explained in the sentence, nor is it a central focus of the sentence.
