There are several types of tests, they have different purposes and aims.
Thus, placement and diagnostic tests help teachers understand the level of the language, what students do and do not know, and, therefore develop a plan of a detailed syllabus course - what to learn, and in what order.
Progress tests usually take place at the end of a certain period of time (e.g. a schoolyear, half-year, term, or simply a single unit). They help teachers understand what needs to be revised.
Also, there are external exams which are usually taken by those who are going to live in language environment (study or work, for instance).
Usually, all four skills are evaluated.
