This unit covers the productive skills: speaking & writing. I was surprised to find that writing is often less of a focus than speaking, though given the previous units and the video lessons, it is clearer that thinking and speaking in English are usually a big focus for these types of classes. The portion related to speaking covers accuracy (study) activities that focus on correct language output as well as fluency (activate) activities that focus on creative use of language. It covers the various types of activities within each of these - controlled, guided & creative, with the former two being more accuracy-based and the last one being fluency-based. There is also a section devoted to how a teacher can encourage students to speak with an example of an ESA lesson on speaking about the weather. Finally, there are clear guidelines for the teacher on what should be done before, during and after the activity to ensure that students get the most value out of the lesson. The next section focuses on writing skills, which are comprised of handwriting, spelling, layout & punctuation, and creative writing. There is an example of an ESA lesson focused on filling out speech and description bubbles in a comic, which was very helpful since writing activities in the engage phase can be a bit difficult (because the focus is not on speaking). Finally, the chapter concludes with games that can be useful in language elicitation in the classroom, such as hangman (which was mentioned in a previous unit), mime (which has also been mentioned in multiple units), and others.
