This section covers the different types of materials used in the class; namely, authentic materials, created materials & course books. Authentic materials are materials such as radio clips, movies, brochures, etc. - i.e. all material that is from every day life and is real. This can be very useful in terms of helping students build confidence in the language, and can be used for different levels. Since this is real-life material, it can help the students feel more comfortable that they could tackle real-life usage of the language. Next, the section covers created materials, which are created by the teacher or other resources to either replace or supplement material in a course book. Created material can be graded to the level of the class, and include activities such as crosswords, gap fill exercises, flashcards, etc. These types of activities are usually welcomed by students because they offer a change from the usual course book and class pattern. Moreover, since these activities are adjusted to the level of the students, they can also be more relevant to the students and help them in a more specific way. This section ends with multiple pages of the various activities listed under created materials to give us an idea of what can be used in class. Finally, the last section of this unit is dedicated to course books and discusses in depth the advantages and disadvantages of text books, as well as how to analyze whether a text/ course book is right for the course. It is usually best to combine the textbook with created materials so that there is variety and so that the students do not lose interest. Also, the text book is created for a general audience, so it is unlikely all sections will perfectly apply to any class. Finally, it is important to look at factors such as price (can the students afford it), methodology (is there room for ESA style lessons), topics (is there enough variety and relevance for the class), and difficulty (is the language level appropriate for the students) to name just a few.
