Unit 13 lays down the general guidelines for english pronunciation. The unit examined the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) and the ways in which it can be used to help teachers and students. For instance, since english is not a phonetic language, the IPA helps to make it possible for English learners to see the pronunciation of a word. For example, just because two words in English are spelt similarly (i.e dead and bead) it doesn't necessarily mean they are pronounced the same. This is where the IPA comes into use. It allows words to be ‘phonetic’ so that the students know which sounds to articulate in a particular word. This subject was followed by how we use the mouth to produce different sounds, including diagrams of the different functions in our mouth and throat. The unit then focused on the use of intonation and stress in the English language and how it emphasises speech. This involved the importance of word stress and intonation in communicating feelings and intentions, as well as useful ideas of activities and techniques (i.e techniques for teaching and indicating intonation - humming, singing, gesture) to teach the subject.
