In unit one we learned about the value of understanding the roles on Teachers and Learners and how complex those relationships can be. There are certain traits of being a teacher- like a simple desire to teach , and of being a student- like a desire to learn that are essential for being good teachers and learners. However, some traits are more specific to individuals and cultures. It is important for teachers to know how to approach individuals based on their own situations. For example, with young children with shorter attention spans it is important to create activities that are engaging, often usual visuals, hands-on activities and activities that don't take extensive periods of concentration because students will become distracted and lose interest. Conversely, with more advanced, specifically adult learners it is more important to provide tasks that are more challenging and require more focus to keep them engaged and to encourage advancement. Ultimately it is very important for a teacher to also try to express empathy, to try to understand where each student is coming from to find the best ways to encourage english language learning.
