This unit provides awesome guidelines for teachers regarding one of the most important and difficult areas of teaching - the planning of lessons. The course lists the benefits of lesson planning and what role it plays in teaching activity.
The unit offers good recommendations on what can be included in a lesson plan, which I find to be an excellent guide. Such points as Learner objectives, Language point, Teaching aids, Procedure and timing of activities, Anticipated problems for students and a teacher are all important steps, which help the teacher follow the proper direction in terms of lessons’ progress. The greatest benefit of the planning of lessons is, to my opinion, an organization - it keeps a teacher organized and prepared in many ways and therefore helps to conduct effective lessons.
I also learned about planning a lessons sequence. The issues analyzed in that section helped me to learn about such approaches as Flexibility in our lesson plans that enables us to include changes into our plans if required and adapt them to our aims. Goals that we need to set, so that we would try to achieve them together with the students throughout a number of consequent lessons. Revision of lessons is important for keeping the gained knowledge active and the Variety and balance in sequence of lessons is required to use as many skills as rationally possible and vary activities throughout the teaching.
A self-evaluation form and self-monitoring ideas were other good coaching points for me. They will help to be more responsible and committed to the success of both students and teachers. I believe that lesson planning is essential step in teaching work.
If I had to replace any teacher, then referring to his/her lesson plans would help me to understand at what stage the students’ progress, what language points have been covered, which materials have been used. (This would give me an idea of what teaching aids I could probably use to engage the students in some familiar activities: “Do you remember, guys, you’ve played this game with your teacher? Let’s play it today!” This might bring a feeling of unity if the teacher is new). Based on the learner objectives mentioned in the plan we could review with the students some previous topics to keep the knowledge fresh.
In other words, I would be able to get a clear picture of the class level, covered themes and activities, students’ accomplishments and their needs, and would know how to move further.
