Unit 15 discusses different methods of evaluating and testing your students’ levels and progress. Assessing a student’s language level can be done through tutorials, evaluation of the course by the students and through tests. There are several different types of tests available, for different stages of the course. Whereas placement tests can be used at the beginning of a course to grasp the language level of students and divide them into different groups accordingly, progress tests are used regularly to check up on the students’ progress. In addition to tests by the teachers, external examinations, organized by organizations outside of the school, are often also taken by students who wish to measure their progress. Some of the most common external examinations are the TOEFL, the Cambridge Assessment exams and ESOL Skills for Life exams. This unit provided me with an in-depth overview of the different types of examinations that a teacher can use to monitor and check students’ progress. The example that was given of an English language skills placement test was very helpful to better understand how this type of test works. Similarly, the detailed explanation of all the external examinations will surely also help me in the future if any of my students wish to take these exams.
