This unit covers the different types of tests and evaluations that can be used for reasons ranging from first understanding a student's language level to preparing them for an external exam. The unit begins by explaining a few ways to gage student levels or progress, such as tutorials, evaluations done by the students and tests. It then delves into the various types of tests, which are as follows: 1) Placement tests - given before the course to understand the level of a student and so they can be placed in the correct level and paired with students at the same level. 2) Progress tests - given periodically throughout the course to understand how much students have retained and understand about the language in question. 3) Diagnostic tests - given at the start of a course to see what students already have knowledge of and to help prepare for future lessons. They are similar to placement tests, but generally more extensive. 4) Practice tests - if the course is one that is preparing students for an external exam, then practice tests are useful for them so that they can get an idea of the test they are going to take and gage their progress. The unit then describes various external examinations such as TOEFL, Cambridge Assessment tests (for both General English & Business English), and the Trinity College London test known as ESOL Skills for Life, which is geared towards people who have moved to the UK from other countries and are making their life in the UK.
