This unit equips us with great and beneficial guide about dealing with probable difficulties and problems we are likely to encounter with when taking our journey to the teaching career. Issues discussed in this unit include the following: how to conduct the first lesson with such an approach that will allow establishing good rapport with the students, get an idea about their needs and to plan a suitable program for lessons, as well as what activities to use to achieve the above aims. Implementation of warmers, dealing with different levels in one group, working with large classes and reluctant students. I was especially glad to learn how to deal with large classes, and the advices listed in that section (use of worksheets and pair/group work to get all students involved, choral repetition, clear instructions, and appointing group leaders) will be of great help, should I get to teach multiple groups of students. To avoid falling back on use of native language, we should try to use activities appropriate for students’ language level and give clear explanations/instructions. To have reluctant students participate along with the rest of the class, there are ways of involving them in activities, such as controlled practice, pair work, role-plays if the students also lacking the confidence to present their answers in front of the class. I also find advices about dealing with different levels in one group to be a helpful prompt. Thus, the teacher would use different materials and could divide students into stronger and weaker groups, or use the same material but with different tasks, which are lengthier and more complicated.
