Unit 7 goes over the components of teaching of a new language. There are three main components when it comes to teaching a new language, which are vocabulary, grammar structures, and language function. Each component reinforces the other. Having a good vocabulary is important, but without grammar structures and language function the words are used out of context. When implementing a lesson plan for these components, it would be best to utilize "ESA" structure in it's various forms; Straight arrow, boomerang, and patch-work. There are certain factors that contribute to the difficulty of teaching vocabulary, such as how similar the language is to the students' own language, English words already known, spelling and what is appropriate for the student and the task at hand. When it comes to knowing a specific vocabulary item, students need to know the meaning, use, word grammar, spelling, and pronunciation. It is important that students know the meaning, use, forms and patterns, and the written and spoken forms of words, when it comes to grammar structure. The last component is language function, in which the goal is the activation of language. Grammar structure and the language function change and guide the use of the vocabulary, based on the setting or scenario. Grammar structures can be different in written and spoken word. The function of language is different if the case calls for including versus excluding. When teaching vocabulary, it is important to note that, it can't stand alone.
