Unit 14 covered course books and lesson material. It showed the difference between authentic (newspapers, T.V shows, instruction manuals, etc.) and created materials (designed by the teacher) and the pros and cons of using a course book. A course book can be very helpful for students and teacher alike, especially new teachers, as it provides a balanced lesson with tired and tested materials and offers a lot of good ideas for teachers to use in the classroom. Teachers should not rely on a course book completely as it might not be best suited for the students or lesson you are teaching and may become boring and predictable if overused. It can also slow a teacher’s growth as they might not be as engaged or creative as if they were creating materials themselves. So a course book can be a very helpful tool but when planning a lesson it should be designed around the needs of the students not what page you are up to in a course book.
