Learning a new language is a daunting experience for many new learners. The responsibility of an ESL teacher is to recognize the requirements and apply relevant teaching techniques for a positive outcome. Starting from introducing vocabulary, to teaching grammar structures and language functions. For an effective learning experience, an ESL student must get lots of exposure to the new language, he/she needs to understand the meaning of the word, how it’s constructed and also require practice opportunities. By applying ESA methods one can ensure all such requirements are achieved. There is no set rule defining which ESA approach is the best and the most effective. However, lessons that target vocabulary and grammar often use the straight arrow ESA approach, where as function based lessons are more commonly tackled with Boomerang or Patchwork ESA structures. There are various factors that can hinder the student’s ability to learn new language. How difficult the vocabulary is, depends on a number of factors like Similarity to student’s own language, similarity to English worlds they already know, spelling, pronunciation and appropriacy. Introducing grammar structure is largely determined by the level of the class and the course syllabus. How to teaching the use of language functions like inviting, refusing, agreeing, disagreeing and suggesting is also covered in this unit. It also covers appropriateness of the language in terms of the kind of language they use formal, informal, tentative and technical. This unit explains how we can make use of different methods and approaches when introducing vocabulary, grammar structures and language functions. How to guarantee an effective and gratifying learning experience.
