There are various assessments that teachers can give in the classroom, to the benefit of both student and teacher. Placement tests determine a learner's language level, while diagnostic tests measure what students already know and what they still need to learn. Progress tests monitor students' improvement (or lack of). There are a variety of external exams that teachers might have to give practice tests for. Some common ones are the TOEFL, IELTS, and TOEIC, along with Cambridge assessments and the Trinity College London test. These are taken outside the classroom and the student chooses which one(s) to take.
