I benefitted from the clear categorization of receptive skills versus productive skills. I would not have thought of breaking language down in that manner. That reading and listening would be receptive skills, or ways we receive information, gives me a firmer hold on what I would need to teach when incorporating those skills in the students. Understanding the motivations, purpose and entertainment, will help me to target the objectives of my exercises. I found the list of specialist skills very helpful in being sure each skill is worked on without lapsing into a style that only builds language ability in only a few areas. I could have easily made that mistake without this section in the unit. Also, being sure to use non-authentic articles will help students when they go to read authentic articles. I could understand why authentic material builds confidence, since the student will feel empowered that they can read and comprehend “real world” articles. It will give them the “Oh wow! I can do this, I’m really understanding this language!” I think the selecting of topics that interest the students is essential to engaging them. I am glad the unit mentioned this and that to do so effectively, a teacher must get to know the students’ interests and vary the topics so something is always engaging someone’s heart. I appreciated the list of keys to receptive skills. It really takes the entire unit and puts it into a nutshell that’s easy to review.
