In this unit, I learnt how to identify and the usages of the different tenses. And so as the student common error/mistake and the teaching ideas suitable for the Active stage of the lesson.
Example of the usages:
Past Simple
1. When the time is asked about
2. Past action with a given time
3. Past habits
4. Series of completed actions
5. For an action that took place at a definite time even if the specific time is not mentioned
6. Past facts or generalization
Past Continuous:
1. Parallel actions
2. Descriptions
3. Interrupted past actions
4. Specific time as an interruption
5. Used to indicate gradual development of the past events
Past Perfect:
1. Reported speech
2. Dissatisfaction with the past
3. Completed action before another action in the past
4. Third conditional sentences
Past Perfect Continuous:
1. Third conditional
2. Reported speech
3. Duration of a past action
4. Showing cause of an action or situation in the past.
I also learnt how to explain the difference in structure and usage between these tenses.
