This unit covers the Past Tenses, its structure and system which is not too different from that of the present tenses. Past Tenses relate to past time periods. There are several fixed rules like all perfect forms feature some form of the verb to have and the past participle form the verb. If the verb is to have then it will be present perfect and if the verb to have is in the past, it will be the past perfect. In case of Past Simple and regular verbs you simply add ed or d to the base form of the verb. For the negative sentence you add did not or didn’t before the base form. And if the sentence is a question than you add did plus subject before the base from. For Irregular verbs again there are no rules to help students understand its formation. These simply need to be memorized. It also tells us when to use it with examples to make it easier when planning a lesson. E.g For a past action when the time is given. ‘I met him yesterday’. For when the time is asked about ‘ When did the second world war breakout? Etc. There is also a list of mistakes and errors that most ESL students make when using the past tenses. Knowing about it before hand will greatest assist in preparing specific exercises. A list of activate teaching ideas has been shared as well which include interactive activities like card games, interview role – play. Etc I believe the activate stage is essential for ESL students to understand this unit better. Because of number of rules it is best to let the students practice as much as they can.
