This unit focused on the two productive skills: writing and speaking. In Japanese schools, there is a major focus on writing, but not at all creatively. Most of the writing my students have done is wrote copying of vocabulary or textbook dialogues. I have always felt this was quite useless, but I could never figure out how to improve that. Hopefully in the future I will be able to improve upon that by making more meaningful assignments that utilizes the student’s creativity. Speaking is almost entirely ignored in the Japanese school system, though we have been working lately to increase these activities – short speaking activities in pairs on a warm up topic are great engages that we have been using.
