The first hurdle a new teacher faces is the first lesson. If approached properly, it can be a valuable opportunity for establishing rapport and finding out students' interests, needs/aspirations, and levels. Warmers help students slide into English learning mode, and they often take the form of games. Some subsequent challenges are disparity in level which can be helped by clever pairing of students and tailoring of materials, difficulties with listening exercises which can be helped by choosing only texts which are level appropriate and including vocabulary enhancement exercises, and reluctant students who can be greatly helped by role-playing, paired exercises and drills.
