This unit tackles the two receptive skills; reading and listening. I learnt about the different specialist skills needed for reading and listening successfully, such as the predictive skills, scanning for specific information, skimming for general idea, reading and listening for detailed information and deductive skills. I also learnt that the choice of topic and/or materials are very important because it would be counter-productive to teach a topic that the students are not interested in or consider a boring one. And that we should encourage our students for general understanding whenever they are reading or listening authentic language parts. Teachers should never assume that because they find a particular topic interesting that it would automatically hold true for the students.
