Conditionals are sentences with "if" or "when" that refer to possibilities in the past, present, or future. There are five types, including zero, first, second, third, and mixed. Each one uses slightly different grammar, which can be confusing for students. But it's helpful to differentiate each type not by its grammar, but by its usage. For example, second conditional presents and unlikely situation, while third conditional refers to a hypothetical past situation. In addition, this unit covered direct versus reported speech. Direct speech is what someone says themselves. Reported speech is what some says they said, in a second-hand account. This calls for some changes to grammar.
