Learnt 4 past tenses. Past Simple: subject+Verb in the past tense. Is used for actions completed in the past at a definite time frame. We use the past form only or the auxiliary 'did' + base form. We form the past tense of regular verbs by adding -ed or -d to the base form of the verb. Irregular verbs (tell, be, bring, do, see, etc) have different rules to follow and must be memorised. It is useful for ordering actions. Past Continuous: subject+ was/were+ verb+ing. Indicates that a certain action was in progress at a particular time in the past. We use the past tense of the auxiliary verb 'be' (was/were) + present participle (verb-ing). It almost always requires some form of time reference. Past Perfect: subject+ had+ past participle. Refers to a past action and a related past action before that. It is the past equivalent of the present perfect. We use the past form of the auxiliary verb 'to have' and the past participle (-ed). Past Perfect Continuous: subject+ had+ been+ verb- ing. To talk about longer action or situations in the past that 'had been going on' continuously up to the past moment that we are thinking about. We use the past form of the auxiliary verb 'to have'+ been+ the present participle (verb- ing) . Reiterated the importance of the activate stages whilst teaching these complex structures. Utilising flashcards, card games, miming, history quizzes, c/v development and interview scenarios to maximise student talk time and keeping an open ended flow to the class room with focus on target language and fluency.
