In this unit, I learned about the different ways of evaluation and testing of ESL students. We can assess their language understanding or the language level through tutorials, evaluation by the students themselves or various types of tests. When we include students to have an idea of what they think about the lessons, or whether they find the lessons too easy or too difficult, it helps us re-shape or modify our future lessons. Of course, if they are not able to express themselves in English clearly, we will have to use their native language if possible. Various types of tests at different stages in a course, before the course or after the course also help us to evaluate their language level. For example, placement test generally at the start of the course enables us in the placement of students in groups according to their language abilities. These tests have multiple choice questions to check their grammar and vocabulary knowledge and open ended questions or interviews to check their fluency level. They start with very simple basic questions and gradually become more difficult as the student keeps going through the questions successfully. Diagnostic tests are generally given at the start of the course to have an idea of what the students know already so that teachers can prepare their lessons accordingly. Similarly, we have progress tests which are used regularly throughout the course to get an idea of students' learning and to know where they need improvement or revision. Practice tests, as the name suggests, are used for preparing the external exams, and therefore they should be in the same format as the actual exam would be. Some of the known external exams are TOEFL and IELTS (used by academic institutions to assess the student's English level for admission purposes), TOEIC which is used to measure the work place English proficiency level. Apart from these, we have Cambridge Assessment tests such as KET, PET, FCE, CAE and CPE etc. Another important test is ESOL skills for LIFE, which is for the people who chose to make a living in UK.
