While I already know each part of speech, learning the explicit rules for each one is imperative. Because I grew up learning the rules through exposure and immersion, I didn't know all of them explicitly. Now I can teach better because I have the words to explain how each part of speech works. I predict that irregular verbs will be especially challenging, because the tenses of each verb just have to be learned and memorized. Being aware of this will help me connect with students and understand what aspects of language are hardest for them.
