In this unit, I have learned about a variety of different teaching strategies and lesson themes (such as the uses of songs, chants, music, games, stories, arts and crafts, seasonal activities, and drama and movement) that may be used as resources to aid student learning. The use of songs, chants, and nursery rhymes can be very effective motivators to aid attention and class participation among young learners. For older students, well-known pop songs and songs that individual students are particularly interested in can be incorporated into lessons in order to motivate learners to practice listening and speaking and to be attentive and active during class. Similarly, games can be adapted for all ages in order to enforce such concepts as vocabulary and grammar points, and they can serve as an effective means to motivate class participation. Stories can also be adapted for learners of different ages and are great for vocabulary building, are helpful in allowing students to practice writing and model writing styles, and can be used to reinforce all four productive and receptive skills (speaking, writing, listening, and reading). Arts and crafts can also be used as an effective resource for young learners and are useful in that they allow students to be creative while providing opportunities to practice vocabulary (such as body parts and adjectives such as color words). Seasonal activities can incorporate stories, arts and crafts, and drama and movement to teach traditions and world cultures, and they can serve as the focal point for fun lesson plans. Drama and movement can also be used to motivate students to practice vocabulary while exercising creativity and staying attentive (i.e., via the use of Simon Says for younger learners).
