This unit covered the different categories and types of evaluation and testing associated with teaching English to non-native speakers. Three major test types include: placement, diagnostic and progress tests. Placement tests are used to determine a students level while diagnostic tests are used to determine a student's individual strength and weaknesses. A progress test is "often required by the school/language center" shows how well a student is retaining information that has been taught by the teacher.
