The past tenses are made up of four types. The past simple tense is used to express completed action in the past at a definite time, and can be taught with an activity like How many people ____? *watched TV The past continuous tense is used to identify a certain action in progress in the past, such as: John was cooking. It can be taught by miming past action. The past perfect tense refers to a past action and a related past action before that, such as: Sue could not finish her homework, because she had not attended the lecture. Finally, the past perfect continuous tenses refers to a continuing action in the past up until an action. This is exemplified in the following sentence: Sue had been cooking for three hours before we ate lunch.
