The unit began by introducing the general theories about language learning and intellectual development. The information included a brief description of the theories, how they relate or overlap, and the names associated with each theory. It described how one acquires and develops the use of language; the various influences and differences between L1 and L2.

The unit included language skill levels (A1-C2) and the variety of roles the teacher switches between while teaching the students.
