To effectively teach pronunciation and phonology, I need to know how articulation, intonation, stress, and rhythm work. Intonation matters because it carries meaning, and a change in intonation can change the meaning of a phrase or sentence. Same with stress. Learning rhythm can help a learner sound more fluent and differentiate between words when a native speaker is talking quickly, which is often a difficult skill to learn. Articulation is definitely the most complex for me, as it involves anatomy and physiology. Knowing how I make sounds with my mouth, throat, and nose will help me demonstrate and explain.
