There are four main skill categories in each language: reading, listening, speaking, and writing. The former two are receptive, because the student is taking in information rather than producing it. Reading has the advantages of being captured on paper for unlimited review, but has the disadvantage of the difficulties that come with spelling and spoken versus written language. Listening is the same spoken language that students hear in class, but offers less time for comprehension. Using a variety of materials on topics suited to the students' interests will keep the class engaged. All material should be suited to the English level of the learners so that they don't get discouraged or intimidated.
