Unit 19 began with categorizing the types of beginning students. I thought the “false beginner” was a new one for me, and the description was helpful as most of the people I’ve met who are trying to speak English fit into this category. They know a few words, and some sentence structure, but are not actively learning the language. The vast lists of how to help and problems to avoid for teaching beginners is very useful and I will try to live the techniques it mentions. The unit also had a section on teaching individual students and the benefits of doing so and the challenges that crop up. The list of activities for individual lessons is very valuable as I can draw upon the extensive suggestions to keep variety in such a situation. I was glad a word was added about homework. I was pleased that latitude is possible depending on the circumstances of the student’s and what the teacher perceives they can successfully handle. I paid special attention to the section on teaching children, as that will be the age group that has the most job openings where I am hoping to teach English. I will be returning to this section over and over to be sure to internalize the qualities needed to teach them effectively. As a past unit in this series on manageing the class room brought out, and this unit as well, class discipline is essential. I really benefited from this detailed discussion that centered on children. I will take it to heart and strive for consistency, patience, and self control. The last section on teaching business English was a very practical section which presented challenges I would never have thought of like sporadic attendance or tiredness from the class time scheduling around the work day. My favorite words from that section were ‘remember you are an expert in the English language and the teaching of it, regardless of any personal doubts you may have.” I needed that encouragement! Lastly, the unit dealt with teaching classes with those who speak the same L1 language and those speaking various languages. The advantage with the multilingual class is that everyone has to speak English, but are more challenging since their linguistic mistakes will be more varied. Good to know this before going into such class settings!
