I learnt about various teaching methods, starting from the 17th century with the Grammar - translation. Audio-lingualism, Task-based learning and so on.While each of the methods had its own pluses and minuses, so gradually drawbacks of one teaching method gave rise to another method until modern day ESA (Engage, study and activate) approach, which was introduced by Jeremy Harmer. This method is considered the most effective of all the teaching methods we know to this date, as it gives the teacher a lot of flexibility in the classroom. ESA methodology has 3 variations, first one being the straight arrow method in which teacher simply follows Engage, Study and Activate sequence. It works well in most of the situations. Second one is the Boomerang ESA lesson, which provides more flexibility to the teacher to have an idea about what the students need before teaching. Third one is the ESA patchwork method. In this method, we can have as many Engage, Study and Activate phases as we require as a teacher, the only condition being that the lesson starts with the Engage method and ends with the Activate method. Also, I learnt about the many interesting activities which can be used in these phases to engage the students in class through various activities, making the class more fun and interesting. Using various kind of activities in these different stages of teaching, helps students and teachers both motivated throughout the class. Then comes the feedback and evaluation of how much the students have learnt, how a teacher can encourage and help the students to improve. It's very important to always use positive expressions while pointing out the mistakes so that the students don't lost interest or get demotivated. Our main focus should be on correction while we are in the study phase, when the students are learning the language point. While correction should be kept minimum possible during engage and activate stages.
