In this unit, I have learned about level testing and needs analyses, considered the external factors that may place constraints on the teacher's design and implementation of a course, studied different types of syllabus design, and reviewed different types of student assessments. Level tests separate students into different levels (on CEF levels or approximate EFL level bandings, for example) in order to display how well English language learners are able to use the language. Tests are typically level graded by ascending difficulty, with the easiest questions at the beginning and the more complex questions following throughout. Needs analyses are meant to give the teacher an accurate idea of a student's previous learning experiences, what the student will foreseeably need to use English for, and the areas that the student believes are most important for them to study. They can be administered through a questionnaire and combined with level testing to determine how groups of students should be arranged. Limiting factors on the design and implementation of a course include the employer's expectations, the resources available to a teacher, cultural issues that may necessitate certain topics or practices being avoided, the time constraints of the course, and the students themselves (their traits, needs, likes, dislikes, and abilities). There are multiple theories detailing how a syllabus should ideally be designed, leading to the formation of terms such as the structural syllabus, functional syllabus, learner-led syllabus, and situational syllabus depending on what the syllabus is designed around. All of these types of syllabi can also be broken down and categorized as either student syllabi, material syllabi, and Organizational syllabi depending on how the syllabi are organized. Regular testing and student assessment is necessary for the teacher to accurately gauge the effectiveness of her or his teaching methods and materials throughout the course. Types of tests include proficiency tests, placement tests, progress tests, aptitude tests, achievement tests, and diagnostic tests.
