The system and structure of the past tenses is not too different from the present tenses, except that past tenses obviously relate to past time periods. All continuous forms feature some form of the verb "to be" plus the'ing' form.If the verb to be in the present,it will be the present continuous. If the verb "to be" is in the past,it will be the past continuous. All perfectf formsfeature some form of the verbs'to have' and the past participle form of the verb.If the verb 'to have'is in the present,it will be the present perfect continuous. If the verb 'to have'is in the past,it will be the past perfect. Past continuous can express an action, which began before that time and probably continued after that time.Had started is an example of the past perfect. Past perfect continuous is used to talk about longer actions or situations in the past that had been going on continuously upto the past moment thnat we are thinking about.
