I learned that evaluation of students is important in gauging progress, isolating effective methods, and troubleshooting ineffective ones. Evaluations are essential for new learners so they can be placed at a level that will challenge them but allow them to participate. Diagnostic tests can be very useful with more advanced learners as they can expose the nooks and crannies of a language and students answers will show where the shadows lie.
In Japan, where I hope to teach, the TOEIC is very popular, so I expect I'll quickly gain experience teaching with an external test in mind.
