This unit covered the basic parts of speech and units of a sentence. As a native speaker sentence construction is natural, so it was good to slow down and consider the specifics of such basic parts of speech as nouns, adjectives, and verbs. It's important to know the intricacies of the language you want to teach. This became much more evident when reviewing prepositions, articles, and irregular verbs. In native speakers their usage is ingrained through example and repetition from an early age, so finding the logic behind them can be difficult. I anticipate these parts of speech will be difficult to teach to new learners, especially older learners that tend to look for matching salient characteristics between their native language and English. For maximum effect when teaching articles, prepositions, and irregular verbs I think it will be important to emphasize patience and immersion in the language. I learned of the distinction between countable and uncountable nouns, how to form comparative/superlative adjectives based on consonant-vowel order in the word being changed, where to place adverbs, the difference between transitive and intransitive verbs, and when to use definite and indefinite articles.
