This unit detailed systems of teaching pronunciation and phonology via use of the International Phonetic Alphabet. As a native English speaker, I found the alphabet itself to be a more sensible way of thinking about language, and gained more exposure and clarity about somewhat random and irregular ways English betrays our expectations of how to pronounce identical pairs of letters. A review of the phonetic alphabet helped me to unravel wrenches within the machine, and have more direct empathy with students learning English for the first time.
